Competition expansion and redevelopment of a retirement home Lens
The expansion of the building embeds itself in the existing topography and marks the back border. A new connection between the building complex, street and village center arises.
In the old building, the room program is modernised and adapted to the current needs of the residents. The entrance to the common areas around the cafeteria forms the heart of the complex. The private rooms on the upper floors remain and are being renovated.
In the new wing of the building, all rooms face the south overlooking the gardens and service areas to the north. The shared spaces are spread over the large windows that frame the north-facing landscape. The central common room is located in the pivot between the building volumes. The psychiatric geriatrics on the first floor has direct access to a secured garden, which is characterised by the natural terrain.
The facade forms a skin of glass and vertical wooden elements that connect the balconies. The project architecturally integrates the landscape and the views into the valley.
A new steep roof expands the existing roof system. The existing building will be energetically renovated and its identity in connection with the new wing worked up.
